Conventional industrial dyes require a large amount of water that must be brought to a high temperature, which consumes a lot of electricity. However, electricity production emits a significant amount of CO2, especially when coal-based. In short, choosing undyed products allows to save energy and to limit water consumption.
To further reduce our carbon footprint, we have identified three other levers:
Whether in their daily lives or in their work, our team members like to explore and challenge themselves.
This is why in 2020 we reworked three of our iconic products implementing our impact reduction minimalist approach. We identified dyeing as one of the most harmful steps in the life cycle of our bivouac gear, therefore we decided to get rid of it – this is how we came up with Minimal Editions Undyed.
Initially produced in limited quantities (8000 items), these Minimal Editions have been quite successful amongst trekking enthusiasts. For them, as for us, the test was conclusive – we needed to continue along this path.
Ever since, a growing number of Forclaz products follow this approach – or other alternatives to classic dyeing, such as dope-dyeing or single yarn dyeing.
You might say that light-coloured equipment is easier to smear. And you’d be right.
However, we are hoping that sports enthusiasts aware of the environmental stakes will prioritise the value of our approach and agree to use gear that might bear the marks of their past adventures.
In order to extend the lifespan of your gear, we’ve released some maintenance and repair tips.
